It was here, in one of the most demanding environments on earth, that the idea for SmarterBarista took shape. The goal was simple but ambitious: build a coffee experience that works flawlessly under pressure and then take it beyond Iceland, sharing that experience with the world.

Two paths, one shared drive
SmarterBarista was founded by Jóhanna and Gilsi.
Gilsi comes from the software startup world, driven by systems, scalability, and intelligent automation. Jóhanna spent years in aviation not only as a captain at Icelandair, but also as a flight instructor shaping future pilots with discipline, precision, and an uncompromising commitment to excellence.
Despite different careers, they shared the same values: attention to detail, innovation, and a deep appreciation for a truly great cup of coffee.

A Turning Point
Like many people, there came a moment when continuing along familiar paths no longer felt right. Stable careers were no longer enough. The desire to create something meaningful grew stronger.
Then life forced everything to pause.
After serious damage to their home, routines stopped and priorities shifted. It became a crossroads — a moment to reflect on what truly mattered and what kind of future was worth building.
Instead of returning to what was familiar, they chose to start over. That moment of uncertainty became the foundation of SmarterBarista not just as a business, but as a new chapter built on courage, curiosity, and purpose.

The journey toward SmarterBarista involved exploring countless ideas before discovering the barista robot that would become its core.
Once the system was seen in action, the decision became clear. This was not just a machine. It was precision, consistency, and intelligent automation working together.
It aligned perfectly with backgrounds in technology, aviation, and operations — reliable systems, repeatable processes, and the ability to deliver exceptional quality every single time.

Through work, family, and adventure, extensive travel made one thing clear: truly good coffee is often hardest to find when it’s needed most in busy airports, remote hotels, and long travel days.
